Ronald Aarts, Research Fellow
Philips Research Eindhoven, the Netherlands

Ronald is with Philips Research since 1977. He has been involved in the research into servos and signal processing for use in both Video Long Play players and Compact Disc players. He has also worked on CAD tools and signal processing for loudspeaker systems. Since 1994, he has worked on the improvement of sound reproduction by exploiting digital signal processing and psycho-acoustical phenomena, e.g. with major contributions to ‘Incredible Sound’ and ‘Ultra Bass’. He has invented and explored various non-conventional sound transducers such as the ‘singing display’ and the thermo-acoustic loudspeaker.

He was a member of the organizing committee and chair for various international conventions. He has published over 200 papers and reports and holds over 160 first patent application filings including over 50 granted US patents for which Philips Research presented him the Gold Invention Award. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Silver Medal recipient, Fellow, and past-governor of the AES (Audio Engineering Society), a member of the NAG (Dutch Acoustical Society), the ASA (Acoustical Society of America), the VvBBMT (Dutch Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering), and the NSWO (Dutch Society for Sleep and Wake Research). At Philips Research Eindhoven, he won the Gilles Holst Award (1999), the first Patent Infringement Award (2000) and the first Eureka Fair Award (2001). Ronald is part-time professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).
