Philips Research is part of Philips Corporate Technologies. The organizations grouped under Corporate Technologies have a strong history in contributing to the innovation in Philips and the development of new markets. Building on the resulting competencies, Corporate Technologies today creates and licenses options and Intellectual Property (IP), provides Research & Development (R&D) services and incubates new businesses.
The management of Philips Research reports directly to
Gottfried Dutiné, Executive Vice-President Royal Philips Electronics and Global Head of Markets & Innovation.

Henk van Houten received his PhD from the University of
Leiden, the Netherlands, in 1984 after graduating in
physics. In 1985, he joined Philips Research where he
investigated quantum transport phenomena in semiconductor
nanostructures – work awarded with the Royal Dutch Shell
prize. From 1988 to 1989, he worked on blue semiconductor
lasers at the Philips Research Laboratory in Briarcliff, NY.
Between 1991 and 1996, he was Department Head of the
Experimental and Theoretical Physics group at Philips
Research in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. From 1996 to 2001,
he was Department Head of the Optics group, being actively
involved in research and standardization of the Blu-ray
optical disc system, and from 2001 to 2002, he was
Department Head of the Storage Signal Processing group.
In 2002, he became Program Manager for Lighting, Devices,
and Microsystems. In 2003, he was appointed Senior Vice
President Philips Research. June 2005, he became Program
Manager Healthcare, with responsibility for a comprehensive
global research program with applications in professional as
well as consumer healthcare, in developed and emerging
markets. The program addresses the innovation needs of the
Philips Healthcare sector in its imaging
systems, patient care and clinical informatics, and home
healthcare solutions business groups. Key innovation themes in the program
include image-guided intervention and therapy, clinical
decision support systems, and home healthcare. From 2005 to
2009, Henk was General Manager of Philips Research Aachen.
On October 15, 2010, Henk van Houten was appointed General
Manager Philips Research.
Henk van Houten was born in Groningen, the Netherlands, in
1957. He is married and has four children.
