Controlling electronic devices from the comfort of your
sofa hasn't always been easy or straightforward. Philips
has addressed the issue by developing a revolutionary
solution known as uWand.
Based on direct pointing, it does away with the
complexity and multitude of buttons associated with
conventional remote controls and instead harnesses the
power of movement.
For example, to scroll through a list of on-screen TV
menu options, you simply point the uWand at the set then
move it up or down. And, because it is highly
directional, you can carry out equally easy control of
other devices as well.
In fact, the uWand could also be used for operating
lighting systems, a hard disk recorder, DVD player,
set-top box, digital photo frame or game console. There
are even new applications in professional fields like
medical and design.
The great benefit of direct pointing is that it is
completely natural and intuitive. You can control
products and manage digital content using simple and
familiar gestures and movements.
The uWand makes use of a small optical receiver embedded
in the controller that identifies beacons built into the
device you wish to control. The built-in receiver sends
among others the pointing coordinates to the controlled
device.
