Berlin, Germany
-- Philips is showcasing alternative forms of video processing at
the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) 2005 in Berlin, Germany,
September 2-7. With its sports-features enhancements, the Philips
Video Processing research group is demonstrating that there are ways
other than the improvement of picture quality to heighten the
quality of a viewing experience.
‘The Amazing Football Tracker’ allows television viewers to see the
trajectory of a soccer ball as it moves across the field. The
Tracker uses state-of-the-art motion-estimation techniques. The
camera zoom and movement are derived from the broadcast television
images. When this information is combined with the result of an
advanced algorithm that detects the location of the ball in the
image, the image-processing technology creates a panoramic overview
of the soccer field and captures the movement of the ball with a
highlighted ball trajectory. The result: the intricate attack and
defense patterns in a soccer play are revealed, giving viewers
real-time insights into the action.
The enhancements show how video processing can turn typical sports
images into a totally new viewing experience, and they add to
Philips’ line of renowned video-processing algorithms, such as
Digital Natural Motion and Pixel Plus.
Video-processing algorithms that are not related to picture quality
are a new phenomenon in the consumer-electronics market. In its
success with Ambilight (an ambient-lighting feature that projects a
soft light onto the wall behind the TV), Philips has already shown
that it is possible to go beyond improving picture quality in the
quest for a better and more informative viewing experience.
The IFA demonstration mimics the ball-track feature as a replay
feature in a TV set and operated by remote control. Other
implementation models are possible. The demonstration is meant to
show the opportunities offered by this type of video processing
technologies and to gain visitors’ feedback on their appreciation of
such options.

Football Tracker.
