Philips opens new Laboratories for Experience Research

Eindhoven, the Netherlands - Royal Philips Electronics is opening its ExperienceLab on 25th October at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Its existing HomeLab facility has been successfully helping Philips to understand how people deal with new technologies in a home setting since 2003. This HomeLab will now be backed up by two new laboratories, CareLab and ShopLab. All three laboratories have come together under the title ExperienceLab.

In CareLab, Philips researches solutions to bring interactive healthcare systems and services into the home environment, for example, new care solutions for the elderly. In ShopLab, the vision that personalized ambient (lighting) atmospheres enhance the shopping experience is researched. Through these labs, Philips will be able to research not only feasibility and usability in home environments, but also applications and experiences for personal care and lighting innovations.

CareLab: Bringing care into the home
The CareLab research program especially focuses on the elderly and chronically ill and how to support them in their daily lives. The latest development projects are placed in the CareLab environment and tested by ordinary people. The objective is to determine if these technologies are really meeting their needs, as well as easy to experience and fun to use.

An example of one of the projects tested in CareLab is the smartBed, which monitors an elderly person while they sleep. A bed is an ideal place for monitoring people’s cardio vascular and respiratory performance and, of course, their sleep. By monitoring people in their familiar surroundings like their own home it can actually help save lives. It can encourage a person to stay fit, and it can also help improve the quality of life for people with heart disease.

“The whole idea of the lab,” explained Ivo Lurvink, CEO of Philips Consumer Healthcare Solutions, “is to deepen our insight into how the elderly and chronically ill deal with the new medical technologies we design to help them in their daily lives. It’s going to help us produce solutions that are attractive and exciting, simple to use but which will also fit smoothly into the background of the home.”

ShopLab: A new future for shop lighting
ShopLab helps us understand the consumer and their decision-making process. With this knowledge we can help to make shopping even more fun with solid state lighting as an enabler of atmosphere creation instead of only light, while allowing shops to maintain their house style and branding.

Lighting is no longer a static thing – it can influence the buying decision. An example of the technologies tested in ShopLab is a solution to create ‘lighting atmospheres’, which has been developed by scientists at Philips and enables the shop manager, for example, to change the atmosphere in his shop in an easy and enjoyable way. Philips is creating smart environments that can detect when people are present and their interest in products when they are inside the shop, or even earlier, when they are still outside, looking in the shop window. Intelligent Shop Windows are envisioned, providing shop owners with new ways to create experiences and attract customers, giving shoppers new ways to find out about the products available, even when the shop is closed.

“A sound understanding of the application is essential for new business opportunities,” said Peter van Strijp, CEO of the business line Philips Solid State Lighting. “This is the essence of ShopLab where new applications are being developed in an interactive way involving all parties in the value chain.”
