Communication systems such as video-conferencing and speech recognition systems require hands-free operation. The large user distance to the microphone leads to acoustic echoes, noise and reverberation, and thus degrades the speech quality. Philips Research concentrates on suppressing these acoustic phenomena by developing adaptive digital signal-processing techniques.
