Panorama 1T is the world's first high-field,
actively shielded, lightweight open MR (Magnetic Resonance) imaging
system. It was launched as work in progress in 2001 by Philips Medical
Systems. The introduction of open MR systems is an important recent
development in which the cylindrical magnet is replaced by pole shoe
designs. This provides more comfort to the patient (some patients feel
uneasy in the traditional tunnel construction), and allows easier patient
access for image-guided treatment. Philips Research Hamburg was closely
involved in the development of the Panorama 1T system. It was responsible
for the design and modelling of the magnet, gradient and RF subsystem
and contributed to the system software and data acquisition method.
