Near-field optical recording

The limits of optical storage continue to be pushed beyond anything imaginable when the compact disc was born. Spectacular improvements in storage capacity were generated first by decreasing pit size, then by addressing ‘the color of light’. Now Philips has found a radical way to break through the next barrier: the solid immersion lens.
