3D TV broadcast standardization
|
|
Standardization of the complete broadcast chain - from production to
distribution and reception – is key for 3D television to enter the
consumer market. At the moment, there is still no suitable,
interoperable 3D broadcast format.
In February 2008, the European 3D4You project will kick off. The aim
of this project will be to define a 3D broadcast format, covering
the whole chain from 3D content acquisition to 3D content
distribution. In this Philips-led project, the BBC (UK), the
Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (Germany), Thomson R&D (France),
France Telecom (France), Christian Albrechts Universität (Germany),
and KUK Filmproduktion (Germany) will work together to deliver an
end-to-end system for high-quality 3D media. The viability of the
format will be demonstrated in production and over broadcast chains,
and the results will be assessed with respect to human factors by
means of perception tests.
3D4You is funded under the IST (Information Society Technologies)
priority of the European Union's FP7 (Seventh Framework Programme)
