In the 2004-2006 timeframe, the OLGA (On-Line Gaming) project, led by
Philips, provided a unified framework to develop scalable 3D game
content enabling roaming of games on a variety of terminals and
networks. The technical key objective needed to fulfill this mission
statement was to enable interoperable adaptation and transcoding of
3D gaming content, including complex and structured objects such as
virtual characters (humanoids), over heterogeneous networks and
cost-constrained devices. In the course of this project, funded
under the IST (Information Society Technologies) priority of the
European Union's FP6 (Sixth Framework Programme), an animated 3D
on-line multiplayer game was developed.
As 3D content is key for the success of 3D television, it is
important to investigate and develop new techniques and process to
record 3D material in a studio environment. This work is done in
close cooperation with Delft University (TUD).
And together with the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e),
Philips 3D Solutions is studying new approaches for the easy
acquisition of 3D content and new coding techniques for the
efficient storage and transmission.
