Mastering the complexity of 'smart' systems

Growing demands on functionality in today's electronic products are leading to an increasing shift towards developing systems in software and programmable hardware in order to increase design flexibility. As a result, an ever increasing part of the development costs of complex systems are devoted to software. This is true even of companies like Philips, traditionally seen as a hardware manufacturer, but many of whose products embody some of the most advanced embedded systems in existence.
