MiPlaza Materials Analysis

The "Virtual lab"

What is the Virtual lab?

The Virtual lab is an internet-based platform that enables:

  • "Watching over the shoulder" of the analist via the internet
  • Real-time collaboration between distant customers and operators on-site
  • Remote control of analytical instruments over the internet (available for restricted group of instruments)

+ Watch the virtual lab
This movie shows the way of working in our virtual lab.

Why?

  • Fast interaction between analists, customers and experts during analysis
  • Sharing of expertise via remote collaboration
  • Sharing of high-end equipment between analytical labs inside and outside Philips

Available equipment:

At present five techniques are accessible via the virtual lab:

  • TEM: our high-end 300kV Transmission Electron Microscope
  • XPS: (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy)
  • FIB (Focused Ion Beam)
  • SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope)
  • TOF-SIMS (Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry)
  • . . . (upon request)

Additional equipment will be accessible in the near future

We offer:

  • A web-based connection that enables "watching over the shoulder" of the analist via the internet.
  • Easy hook-up of additional equipment.
  • A platform that was successfully tested by test users in the Netherlands (Philips Research, DSM, Corus) and Japan, using MiPlaza equipment.

Merits

As compared to the ‘classical’ analytical lab:

We offer

  • Interaction with customers and experts during analysis
  • Shorter response time
  • More easy access to portfolio of techniques at MiPlaza Materials Analysis.

As compared to competitive internet solutions:

We have

  • A generic platform for any instrument.
  • A general solution for data protection & authorisation.

Technical requirements and security issues

The platform offers

  • Instrument-independent remote control
  • Accessibility through any company internet firewalls
  • Confidentiality of data
  • Authorised access only to own data and pre-booked equipment
